Reading ability is an important aspect in foreign language learning. Many linguists and educators have found that a large mount of reading have a positive effect on improving the skills of various aspects of the English language. However, the requirement of curriculum standards for high school students' English extracurricular readings has increased from 300,000 words to 360,000 words. And facing the reform of college entrance examination, the pressure on students' English tests has increased, and reading comprehension is also a major part in the English college entrance examination. In addition,a lot of reading can improve other English language skills. In terms of students' language inputs, merely relying on the classroom teaching is not reluctant to achieve their goals and adapt to the new college entrance examination. Therefore,it is imperative to develop extracurricular English reading activity.Meanwhile,English extracurricular reading is complementary and is the extension of classroom teaching, which is an important way to consolidate students' language knowledge and cultivate their independent reading and thinking ability. Therefore, the overall situation of high school students' English extracurricular reading is worth exploring in depth.Based on the theories of Krashen' Second language acquisition,Constructivitist, and the Scheme, etc, the thesis illustrates the necessity and importance of conducting extracurricular reading activity. The subjects of this study are the 300 students of Grade 1,Grade 2 and Grade 3 and 7 English teachers in Anren No.1 School of Chenzhou City,Hunan Province. This thesis mainly studies the following three questions: 1)How is the current overall situation of senior high school students' English extracurricular reading in Anren No.1 School? 2)What problems exist in senior high school students' English extracurricular readings? 3)Are there positive correlations between high school students' English extracurricular readings and students' English academic performance? The methods of this research are quantitative and qualitative. In the analysis, the quantitative research part mainly adopts a questionnaire survey to explore the overall situation of reading English in Anren No.1 School.Qualitative analysis uses interviews to gain the teachers' understanding of students' English extracurricular reading. The results show that: 1)In general, the current situation of students' participation in English extracurricular reading is not very optimistic.Although students have a positive attitude towards English extracurricular reading, most students are not interested in extracurricular reading and lack of plans, and they need help and guidance in materials choosing and reading strategies application. There are still a large number of problems that need to be solved in reading, and the participation of teachers needs to be improved.2)The quality of English extracurricular reading has a certain correlation with the students' English performance, which indicating the necessity of carrying out English extracurricular reading.3)Strategies to improve students' English extracurricular reading mainly fall into five themes: raising students' interest in English extracurricular reading, guiding students to choose appropriate reading materials, developing reading skills and strategies, monitoring and evaluating students' English extracurricular reading, guiding students to improve autonomous learning ability. This study aims to provide the data and analysis of the overall situation of English extracurricular reading in Anren No.1 School under the new background of the college entrance examination reform,so that teachers can make preparations for the teaching strategies in advance, and also for students to know how to make good use of English extracurricular reading, and the author put forwards some pedagogical suggestions for teaching.Although the author has tried utmost to complete this survey, there still some limitations. The representativeness of this study is not strong because the scope of the study is small and there are no surveys of all teachers and students throughout the school. It may lead to insufficient results. And it is difficult to ensure that whether the results of student questionnaires are accurate, because it is possible that some students do not fill in questionnaires according to the actual situation.Teachers' interviews are also likely to be subjective. The further study should be conducted on a large scale. This study just surveyed the situation of Anren No.1 School, the further study can enlarge the scale to English extracurricular reading, then offer the constructive pedagogical suggestions.Such as,in English teaching, the teachers should Cultivate students' interest in English reading correctly, guide the students to choose the right reading material, develop students' reading skills and strategies, supervise and give feedbacks to students' extracurricular reading.
