David Finch is a master of cinematography in Hollywood,his films are very classic.As for the characterization in the film,He always insists on his own unique perspective,especially the masculinity,which is a primary subject of David Finch's films.This thesis focuses on the masculinity in David Finch's films and is based on Cornell's theory of masculinity.From the perspective of film major,this paper discusses the image characteristics and textual connotation of masculinity,and rethinks the right relations of masculinity production under the theory of field of presence.The thesis is divided into three chapters.Chapter One summarizes masculinity as an important theme in David Finch's films.On the one hand,the male constitutes the main body of the film characters,the actors in the film are mainly male,and the male mainly takes the leading role in the film narration.On the other hand,the male practice constitutes the main content of the film.In the film,the male has displayed the male temperament through various kinds of practical activities,and events surrounding these practical experiences form the mother of the film story.The female is shown in the film mainly in the other person's image,the symbolization of their identity and the subordination of status echo the mainstream gender order of American society,also confirm the male's dominant position in the film from another angle.The second chapter analyzes the black style of David Finch's films and its representation of masculinity.David Finch directs many noir movies to reveal the complex context of masculinity,and we can see a variety of male characters swimming in the dark shadows.Dark tones,fast-paced clips,tense sounds and ultra-conventional motion shots are typical features of David Finch's dark films and the image style that characterizes masculinity.Marginal masculinity in dark shadows,dominant masculinity in violent conflict collusive masculinity in self-disorientation and subordinate masculinity under oppression present the crisis and challenge of masculinity from different aspects.The third chapter discusses the power field of the male temperamental structure in David Finch's films.At the micro level,the body,gender,class and race constitute the internal field of masculinity,the differences show that the competition for masculinity is the process of consultation and struggle of cultural hegemony.The diversification of masculinity is the result of the intersection of various forces in the environment field of the construction of masculinity.On the macro level,the masculinity of David Finch's films echoes the new political and economic changes in the United States,To participate in the production of the discourse of the consumer society,to represent the cultural modernity,in the mutual influence and mutual construction with the state,society and culture,the masculinity participates in the practice of the popular culture and constructs a new self-identity.
