Erasmus was an outstanding humanist in the European Renaissance. He sojourned in many European countries all his life and made an important contribution to the spread of Christian humanism. He traveled between the European continent and England many times, bringing the achievements of Renaissance humanism "new learning" to England, and deeply rooted his Christian humanism in the English land.Under his influence, the direction of humanist research, the focus of school teaching and religious atmosphere in England have changed. It can be said that his Christian humanism was accepted by the British king and bishops and archbishops, thus pointing out the direction of English reformation. Before Erasmus sojourned in England,Britain had just emerged from the long feudal melee.Henry ? and Henry ? tried to consolidate the throne and implement a new monarchy. After the establishment of the new political order, people began to pursue cultural prosperity. The active advocacy of early British humanists and the strong support of kings and nobles laid a foundation for the study of humanism in Britain. Then Erasmus came to England, his ideas were mainly disseminated through three ways in British society:the exchange of ideas among scholars, the publication and distribution of books, and school education. It has been loved by British intellectuals and the upper classes, and has also aroused the thinking and controversy of the academic circles.Erasmus led the development of British humanism, and many outstanding British scholars of the same time were influenced by his thoughts, thus changing the direction of research. He also promoted the modernization of British education, and prompted Cambridge University to break away from the shackles of scholastic philosophy and turn to New Learning.Under the guidance of his educational thought, the concept and curriculum of basic education in Britain had also changed.Erasmus had been devoting himself to reforming the internal defects of the Church and restoring the purity of the primitive Church. From this point of view,he put forward the methods of studying the Bible and the early Godfather's works. He attached great importance to the cultural and moral education of human beings so as to keep people away from ignorance and reshape social moral norms. These ideas were disseminated through Erasmus and his successors and absorbed by British official religious reformers and civil reformers.Eventually,it had an important impact on the occurrence of English Reformation and transformation into a Protestant country with a remarkable moderate point.
