With the development and progress of science and technology,our society has entered a new information age.In the new Information Age,the traditional English teaching has revealed a variety of drawbacks.As it is not quite adaptable to the development of the new era,English teaching reform is imminent.In the 1990 s,linguists applied multi-modal theory to the field of teaching,and multi-modal teaching came into being and achieved good results.At present,the application of multi-modal theory in English teaching is mainly involved around college English teaching,while there are few cases in primary school.Obviously there is still room for improvement in primary school students' English proficiency.Therefore,in order to enhance teaching effectiveness,this paper focuses on how to implement multi-modal teaching in primary English classroom.Based on multi-modal theory,this paper defines the related concepts of multi-modal theory,analyzes the connotation of multi-modal theory,combs the literature of multi-modal research at home and abroad,and expounds the feasibility and necessity of applying multi-modal theory to primary school English teaching.Then,starting from the visual modality,auditory modality and tactile modality,this paper discusses how to integrate the different modalities as text,phonetics,pictures,tables,music,video and other modalities in accordance with different teaching contents,and shows a lesson design and process of a multi-modal English class in primary school.Finally,this paper begins with an empirical study of multi-modal teaching methods applied in primary English classroom.This paper makes a comparative analysis of the pre-test and post-test data of the traditional primary school English teaching and the experimental class with multi-modal primary school English teaching,and interviews some teachers and students in the experimental class.The empirical results show that the post-test scores of the experimental class are significantly higher than those of the control class;the interview results show that the students' attitudes towards English learning in the experimental class have changed positively.Their interest in English learning is strong,and their attention is alsohigher than that of the control class.The application of multi-modal teaching has greatly improved the instructional effectiveness,students' English proficiency has been greatly improved,and students' comprehensive English ability has been promoted.This research can play a certain role in reference and guidance for primary school English teaching practice.
