A Contrastive Study On Translator's Subjectivity In English Translations Of Han-shan Poems From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

Eco-translatology provides a new perspective for translation studies.It defines translation as “the translator's selective activity to adapt to the translational eco-environment.” This theory puts forward the concept of “translator-center” and turns the focus of translation research to the translator.It is an important theoretical tool for studying the translator's subjectivity.At present,more and more scholars apply Eco-translatology to translation studies.Han-shan Poetry is marginal in the history of Chinese literature,but it has not only spread to Japan,South Korea,Europe and the United States,but also set off a “Han-shan fever” in the United States.There are several English translations.The Waley's and Snyder's translations are two English versions published in the same era but in different countries.Although the former has attracted the attention of some British scholars,there was not much social response;while Snyder's translated poems have been republished many times and become the classics of American translated literature.There are many research outcomes in the academic circles on Snyder's translation.There are few studies contrasting and analyzing the two translations.But there is no research on the two translators' subjectivity from the perspective of Eco-translatologyBased on Eco-translatology,this thesis expounds the key translational eco-environment that affects the translation process of Waley and Snyder,including the original text,social background,and translation ideas.From three dimensions,namely linguistic,cultural and communicative dimension,the thesis reveals the translator's subjectivity that the two translators played in the specific translation process.It concludes that: unlike Waley,Snyder combined with his own natural ecological ideas,adapted to the social background of the United States in the 1950 s and 1960 s and chose some of the Han-shan's poems that reflected the spirit of the Beat Generation.He also presented his subjectivity in the translation process from the three dimensions.Different from Waley's translation,Snyder's translation highly reflects his translator's subjectivity in adapting to the specific translation eco-environment,and has the highest holistic degree of adaptation and selection.Theapplication of theoretical results related to Eco-translatology has an explanatory effectiveness for the study of translator's subjectivity.The thesis is divided into five chapters.Chapter one is a general introduction to the research background,research objective and significance,research methods,and the outline of this thesis.Chapter two is a general review of the previous studies on the English versions of Han-shan's poems,as well as previous studies on Eco-translatology.Chapter three provides a theoretical basis for this thesis,that is,Eco-translatology.Chapter four is devoted to a detailed contrastive analysis of Snyder's and Waley's subjectivity in their translations of Han-shan's poems from the perspective of Eco-translatology.Chapter five concludes the thesis by reviewing the previous parts and summarizes research results,limitations and suggestions.
