Biographical Genealogy And Image Transition—the Pisscussion Around Lü Yijian In The Song And Yuan Dynasties

There are at least 12 kinds of Lü Yijian biographies in the Song and Yuan Dynasties that are now preserved or still left in the literature.Three works under the reign of Emperor Ren Zong:(a)the Lü Yijian's Brief Biogtraphical Sketch,(b)the Lü Yijian's Epitaph written by Li Shu,(c)Zhang Fangping's Huai Zhong To,mb Stele.Two official biographies in the period of Emperor Shen Zong,(a)the Lü Yijian's biography of The Ren Zong Shi-Lü,(b)his authentic biography of the Liang chao Guo-shi.Three private biographies written by literati,(a)Zeng Gong's Long Ping Ji,(b)Lü GongZhu's Jia Zhuan(Family Biography),(c)Lü Xizhe's Lü Shi Jia Shu Ji(Family Biography).Three works should be mentioned in the Southern Song Dynasty,(a)Wang Cheng's Dong Du Shi Lüe,(b)Zhu Xi's Wu Chao Ming Chen Yan Xing Lü(the Famous Ministers' Records of Words and Deeds in Five Dynasties),(c)Huang Zhen's Gu Jin Ji Yao.And the Yuan Dynasty has an official one,(a)Song Shi·Lü Yijian's Biography.As a whole,there are four stages about the image of Lü Yijian.The image of "Huai zhong" created in the period of Eemperor Ren Zong.In the context of the reformism in Shen Zong period,the "Liang chao Guo-shi" added his re-shaping image of "huai zhong" with the "Fei Da" political symbol,and lightened the construction of the negative image of Lü Yijian created by the dispute between Fan Zhongyan and Lü Yijian.The Southern Song Dynasty showed two ways of dissatisfaction with the Liang chao Guo-shi represented by Wang Cheng and Zhu Xi.Wang Cheng deleted the negative construction of Lü Yijian's image for "Fei Da",and added some historical materials to make his image of "Huai Zhong" fuller.However,under the guidance of"Li learning" and holding the value judgement of "commended Fan but denied Lü",Zhu Xi has constructed the evil image of Lü Yijian.At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty,Huang Zhen,as a Neo-Confucianists,combined the two abovementioned negative materials posed by the reformism and Zhu Xi.The Rough Neo-Confucianism of "Song History·Lü Yijian Biography" presents the image of Lti Yijian's image in the history of official revision and the Neo-Confucianism.Restoring and understanding the relationship between the image formation of Lü Yijian and the evolution of biography genealogy can reflect the political and cultural factors in Song Dynasty behind the writing of the biography,and it also provides a new perspective for understanding the writing of the Northern Song Dynasty.
