In the study field of second language acquisition,the study related to learning motivation has been a heated focus for more than half a century.Most of the researchers and language teachers regard it as an important factor in the learning effect of language knowledge and skills.However,there are relatively few studies on the relationship between language learning motivation and learners as a whole,i.e.on the former's influence on the latter.Xu Hongchen revised D?rnyei's theoretical model of "Second Language Motivational Self System" and developed an English Learning Motivational Self System(ELMSS)scale,which consists of three components--Possible English Self,Present English Self and Past English Self.Each Self consists of five dimensions: Confident person,English-fluent person,Cultural messenger,Good student with duty and Work-capable person.The scale was validated by an empirical study on Chinese college students' ELMSS conducted by Xu Hongchen.However,until now the scale has rarely been seen to be employed to investigate the ELMSS of English-related majors in Universities in the Minority areas like Guangxi.Under the background of globalization,Chinese English learners' English learning motivation will also be different.In this study,aiming at its research purpose,the questionnaire based on the scale is adopted to investigate the current situation of ELMSS among English-related majors in Universities in Guangxi so as to obtain some implications for English teaching and learning,arouse students' English learning motivation and thus improve the quality of English teaching.For these purposes,the author set out the following research questions from two perspectives:1.What are the general characteristics of five dimensions of ELMSS in each component among English-related majors?2.Are there any differences between gender,grades,and learners of different English proficiency respectively in each component of ELMSS?A questionnaire survey was conducted among 389 English-related majors from grade one to grade four of Nanning Normal University.The data were analyzed and interpreted by SPSS20.0.The results of these analyses are shown as follows:1.The general characteristics of five dimensions of ELMSS in each component among English-related majors are significant;2.There exist significant differences between gender,grades,and learners of different English proficiency respectively in each component of ELMSS.Finally,the author summarizes and analyses the causes of these situation,and make some recommendations for students and teachers.For example,students should maximize the use of learning materials and make their English learning more efficient.Teachers should guide students to set up correct English learning motivation.
