A Study On English Reading Teaching In Junior High School Based On The Cultivation Of Thinking Quality

Under the background of key competencies,thinking quality is one of important English teaching objectives.However,some teachers are not clear about the specific teaching methods of thinking quality,and carry out less high-order thinking activities.How to organize thinking activities reasonably is the key to the cultivation of thinking quality in the reading instruction.This paper expounds the research status of thinking quality by the literature research and analyzes the thinking level of reading objectives in English Curriculum Standards based on the New Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognitive Objectives.Combining with the Schema Theory and the Constructivism Learning Theory,the teaching principles and the strategies are proposed.On the basis,a case study of the New Standard English reading lesson was conducted and redesigned,which was given by the writer in the early stage of the study.The results of the study are mainly presented in three aspects.Firstly,reading objectives in junior high school are mainly in remembering,understanding,application and analysis.Evaluation and creation can be added.Secondly,the reading instruction should be student-centered,teaching-oriented,and focus on the textual connotation,reflecting the hierarchical,coherent and systematic thinking.Thirdly,applying teaching strategies to cultivate various thinking skills rationally.Teachers can refine the memory activity and use visual tools to develop their remembering skill;guide students to read the title and the picture to predict the text and classify the genre,and question the keyword meaning to improve their understanding;create the similar context and guide students to use reading strategies,enhancing their applying skill;use the plot analysis diagram to help students mine the text connotation and train their ability of semantic summary,developing their analytical ability;determine the critical evaluation content,provide the evaluation criteria and question students' evaluation,improving their evaluating ability;organize the discussion on practical problems and carry out the continuation of the story to enhance their creative ability.Based on the above results,the author conducts a case study and the principles and strategies are used to the redesign,which provides some suggestions on English reading teaching.Teachers can activate students' thinking through remembering and understanding activities in pre-reading stage;use understanding,analyzing and evaluating activities to improve thinking quality in while-reading stage;carry out application and creative activities to expand their thinking in post-reading stage,systematically improving students' thinking quality.
