The Research Of Yuan Jue’s Biography

On the basis of the Yuan Dynasty’s pluralistic integration of society as well as the Sino-foreign exchanges in the thirteenth and fourteenth century,this thesis focuses on analyzing the selection of biographical protagonist and the characteristics of biographic writing in Yuan Jue’s biographies to conduct a deep and systematical research on the biographical creation of Yuan Jue,combining with the formation of Yuan Jue’s academic literacy and the orbit of official officials with a view to Yuan Jue’s position of being an important Guange official in the Middle Yuan Dynasty.This thesis is divided into three chapters.The first chapter expounds Yuan Jue’s biographies as well as the social style and features of the Yuan Dynasty.Yuan Jue presents the features of social pluralism and integration of the Yuan Dynasty in his biographical works with many contents,including the ethnic and religious diversity,the importance of interpreters in government affairs,etc.The experiences of ministers’ serving as envoys and military generals’ serving for fighting are presented in the biography of the Sino-foreign with documentary writing style,and the history from the beginning of Yuan Dynasty to the middle period of the Yuan Dynasty is reproduced.The reason why Yuan Jue was able to reproduce this period of history in the form of biography is related to Yuan Jue’s family education,teachers,historiography of eastern Zhejiang,the ambition of history study,and the practical experience of historiography.Therefore,Yuan Jue can uphold the historian’s attitude in his biographical creation and make his biographical works show a strong historic significance.The second chapter expounds the selection of biographical protagonists.The characters in Yuan Jue’s biographical works are full of the vitality of the times.The pluralistic fusion of the Yuan Dynasty brings certain ethnic contradictions and extra-territorial conflicts.It is under this background that ministers and generals in his biography stand out and make important contributions to the stable rule of the Yuan Dynasty and the opening-up of the frontier.The special system of selecting officials in the Yuan Dynasty forms a unique bureaucratic system,and a large number of officials in the upper and middle class become the backbone of the bureaucratic system in the Yuan Dynasty.The narration of the experiences to this kind of biographical protagonists in his biographies truly reflects the particularity of the official administration in the Yuan Dynasty;the pluralistic social culture brings different values and social ethics,which is especially prominent in biographical protagonist who pursuit their personal choices like hermits and unyielding women in the historical changes and times turbulence.Through the record of these characters’ lives as well as the creation of their images,the times of the Yuan Dynasty’s pluralistic blending are reappeared.The third chapter expounds the writing features of Yuan Jue’s biography,which reproduces historical events and historical characters through documentary narrative style and natural writing features.In the narration of historical events,the contents that can be used to supplement the historical facts are selected;in the narration of personnel,the close combination of the life of the characters and the historical events are laid stress on;in narrative attitude and emotion,a prudent,calm and objective writing attitude is adopted to make his biographies present a natural literary style as a whole.
