The material provided by parallel corpora is rich and authentic. In recent years, parallel corpora have been applied in translation teaching as a new teaching resource. So far,a lot of scholars have done research on relevant fields, such as “corpus-based translation teaching modes”,“the application of self-built parallel corpora in translation teaching” and so on.However, the research on the advantages of parallel corpus-based translation teaching mode over the traditional one is not enough.Based on constructivism and autonomous learning theory, this paper makes a comparative study on parallel corpus-based translation teaching mode and the traditional one.The author tries to explore the following questions: 1)Does parallel corpus-based translation teaching mode really have advantages over the traditional one?2)If so,what are the specific advantages? 3)Why does parallel corpus-based translation teaching have such advantages? In order to find the answers to the above questions, this study 1)built a small parallel corpus, which is based on the government work reports of the premiers of the State Council from 2000 to 2012;2)used a computer-aided translation software,Snowman,to load the parallel corpus, and conducted an empirical study with 30 junior English majors in Jiangnan University and30 junior English majors in Luoyang Normal University as experiment subjects;3)took advantage of AntConc to make quantitative and qualitative analyses,so as to explore the specific teaching advantages of parallel corpus-based translation teaching. The study discovers that parallel corpus-based translation teaching mode is more conducive to improving students' overall translation ability and level, which is embodied in the following aspects: 1)terminologies.The statistical results showed that the accuracy of the translation of ten terminologies in the experimental group was higher than that of the control group in varying degrees;2)collocations.By comparing and analyzing students' translation, the author found that the accuracy of verbs and prepositions in the experimental group was generally higher than that in the control group;3)sentence patterns.Based on the analysis of the sentence translation accuracy between the two groups, the author discovered that the accuracy of sentence translationin the control group was significantly lower than that of the experimental group;4)vocabulary.Based on the statistical analysis of 60 articles, the author found that the type-token ratio of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. In addition,by comparing the average translation scores of the experimental group and the control group, the author found that the former was significantly higher than the later.Besides, the result of Independent Samples T Test showed that there was a statistical difference between the two groups. As mentioned above, this study has achieved some research results, which will provide some enlightenment for future researches on translation teaching.Firstly,it is necessary to provide students with rich and authentic learning resources and advanced learning tools, such as parallel corpora and computer-aided translation software,to stimulate students' learning enthusiasm.Secondly,we should advocate autonomous learning and cooperative learning to improve students' class participation. Finally,in order to provide students with learning environment for applying knowledge into practice, teachers should take advantage of coherent and closely related teaching materials in different teaching links.Due to the limitations of manpower and material resources, the quantity and the subject of the parallel corpus used in the experiment is insufficient. Therefore, further researches remain to be done, such as selecting more subjects, expanding the scope and quantity of parallel corpora and so on.
