Application Of Catford's Translation Shifts Theory In Translating Growing Together:Personal Relationships Across The Life Span

Catford's Translation Shifts Theory is based on linguistics.The theory puts an emphasis on translation content and effect rather than formal correspondence,giving a systematic analysis of the different ways of word-formation and sentence-building among languages.It mainly consists of two types of shifts.A large number of academic studies have shown that the theory has strong applicability and clear classification in translation practice,which has a far-reaching influence on later translation studies.In specific translation practice,Catford's Translation Shifts Theory can provide many effective translation strategies and methods.The purpose of this thesis is to combine abstract theory with translation practice,and to explore the translation strategies under the two shift methods by analyzing the respective characteristics and differences between English and Chinese so as to provide some practical methods for the translation of similar texts.Examples in this report are picked from the Chinese translation of chapter 1 and chapter 11 of Growing Together:Personal Relationships across the Life Span.These two parts mainly introduce personal relationships,social cognition and social relationships from a lifetime perspective.Through the analysis of the selected materials,the translator believe that these two chapters can promote our understanding of foreign studies on social sciences and psychology,and also have certain reference significance for domestic research,which can broaden our perspectives of human,personal relationships and social development.This report selects recategory shifts and explores specific translation strategies and skills.Translation strategies al translation examples from two aspects of level shifts and and skills under level shifts include the shifts of tenses and plurals,and four aspects of category shifts are included:structural shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts.At the same time,the existence of differences between English and Chinese will inevitably bring about various shifts in translation practice.The use of diverse shift methods should be based on the original content and the characteristics of the target language so as to make the translation read more smoothly on the premise of faithfully conveying the original content.
