Grammar has always been a hot issue of English teaching.In 2003 Senior High School English Curriculum Standard puts forward a learner-centered idea to change the teaching condition of overvaluing grammar rules.Under the new college entrance examination,the test of English grammar turns to examine the practical application of grammatical knowledge in context from the test of grammatical knowledge.The author conducts a survey about the situation of grammar teaching of senior grade one in a middle school of Nanchang and learn the teachers' and students' understanding about English grammar,methods and strategies which teachers use to teach grammar and students' performance in grammar learning by such ways as classroom observation,questionnaire,interview and analysis of grammatical errors in composition and oral English.As a result,it can be concluded as following:(1)Both teachers and students attach great importance to grammar teaching,but only a small group of students like grammar,many students think grammar is difficult,lack confidence in grammar learning and are unclear about the goal of it.(2)The way of language input is single,because most teachers chiefly show model sentences and sum grammar rules,teachers pay too much attention to formal training and ignore the cultivation of student's ability of using language;the interest and effect of teaching need to be improved;the strategy of error correction is single: teachers tend to let students correct grammatical errors that occur in the composition by themselves,as for the oral grammatical errors,most teachers tend to correct errors by pointing out the errors directly in class or collective action.(3)Most students lack systematized grammar knowledge;students are prone to make grammatical errors on language output due to the lack of grammatical knowledge,the improper summary of grammatical rules,the negative transfer of native language,error correction strategy being single and so on;some students don't make good use of grammar class,consolidating the grammar knowledge only by exercises and memorization;when having difficulty in grammar learning,only a small group of students turn to theirteachers for help,most students won't correct the grammatical errors on their own.Finally,the author gives some relevant suggestions,hoping it provides references for grammar teachers in high schools and it is beneficial to most senior one students.
