As we all know,English reading plays an important role in English learning for senior high school students. How to improve English reading ability becomes a vital task in senior high schools. In the literature of reading, many researchers have proved the validity of Mind Mapping in the teaching of English reading. However, there exists individual differences among the students, which will possibly influence the efficiency of reading, such as intelligence, motivation, aptitude, personality, learning styles and cognitive styles. This research attempts to investigate whether the introduction of Mind Mapping into the teaching of English can possibly enhance senior high students' reading abilities in a key urban high school in Ganzhou No.3.In addition,it will try to find out whether it can produce different influences to the students of different cognitive styles(field-independence/ field-dependence).And then a further study will be conducted to find out the different effect on students assigned with different styles of reading tasks through the introduction of Mind Mapping. The results indicates that senior high students' reading abilities can be improved after applying Mind Mapping in reading classes and there is greater influence on the field-independent students than the field-dependent students. However, there is no significant difference between the field-independent students and the field-dependent students in the experimental classes when assigned with different styles of reading tasks. As a result,it can give some enlightenments to the teaching of English in senior high schools, especially to those who attempts to introduce Mind Mapping into their teaching.
