English writing plays an indispensable role in the process of language learning and teaching.As an important language output skill,writing can reflect a student`s cognitive ability and language comprehensive competence.However,the real situation of rural middle school students` writing teaching is not optimistic.The author applies the reading-to-writing approach into the teaching of English writing of a class in Changling middle school,HuiChang county,Jiangxi.Two parallel classes which totally 85 students from Grade 8 are chosen as research subjects.The teaching experiment lasts five months.Class 1 is the experiment class,while Class 2is the control class.In the control class writing-only teaching method is used,while reading-to-writing approach is employed in the experiment class.There are three steps in using the reading-to-writing approach to conduct writing class.The first step is pre-writing,which aims to provide relevant reading materials for the later writing.The second step is while-writing,including reviewing,making planning and individual writing.The third step is the post writing,in which students should rewrite base on the comments from teachers and peers.This study is designed to discuss the following questions:1)Whether “reading-to-writing” teaching approach is applicable for the students in rural middle schools or not ?2)Comparing with writing-only,can reading-to-writing approach improve junior middle school students` writing competence ? If so,in which aspects?Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to analyze the data.It found that reading-to-writing approach did better in improving rural junior middle school students` writing competence,especially in enriching writing content,enlarging vocabulary,improving the usage of grammar.However,reading-to-writing approach is not a teaching method which can solve all the problems.It is necessary to have some adjustments according to the actual situations when it is applied.
