| Since interpreting is an immediate act which also contains features of spontaneous speech,it is inevitable that sometimes interpreters have to make repairs in order to fulfill their tasks. In this regard, the research on self-repairs of trainee interpreters is of great significance as it can not only help the interpreting learners better understand their interpreting process but also provide useful information for interpreting teaching. The research aims to examine the self-repairs of trainee interpreters in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting in terms of frequency and types of repairs, repairing process and general norms that guide the repairing behaviors. In detail, the research will answer the following questions: 1)what kinds of self-repairs are made by trainee interpreters in ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting;2)how do trainee interpreters complete self-repairs in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting;3)what interpreting norms are obeyed by trainee interpreters in making self-repairs during the consecutive interpreting. To answer the three questions, this research adopts the descriptive and empirical approaches to probe into the self-repairs of trainee interpreters in consecutive interpreting. In this regard,15 MA and MTI students in interpreting study from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies were selected to do an experiment of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.Besides, retrospective interviews were conducted to the participants. The participants were also asked to finish the questionnaires after the experiment.Under the guidance of the repair model in consecutive interpreting based on interpreting norms, the interpreting recordings have been made in transcripts in parallel form for analysis.Based on the statistics, the most commonly-used repair of trainee interpreters in consecutive interpreting is same information repair. The trainee interpreters tend to repeat the same information frequently.Besides, the interpreters make error repairs more frequently than appropriateness repairs. The interpreters do not always immediately complete the repairs as some editing terms are involved between the reparandum and final version of translation.Statistics show that when the interpreter starts to repair,he will complete it without giving up.While the trainee interpreters are making self-repairs,they always adhere to ST-TT relation norms and communication norms. They attach great importance to maintaining the meaning consistency and information completeness between the source language and the target language, and try to convey the original messages in the best way for the sake of the audience. |
