After almost 40 years' theoretical introduction and development of forensic linguistics,Chinese courtroom discourse is not only highly valued by the field of linguistics, but also law circles put more and more attention to study and explore courtroom discourse.Recently, except for the static study of courtroom discourse from various perspectives, such as presupposition, interruption, discourse markers, vagueness, scholars turn to explore the dynamic features of courtroom discourse. Therefore, from the perspective of broad Chinese mandarin intonation, this thesis aims to disclose and analyze pragmatic functions of imperative sentence in courtroom discourse, with the purpose to deepen the understanding of traditional imperative sentence, enrich research content and provide a new research point of view for courtroom discourse analysis as well.Under the guidance of focus theory and pragmatic identity theory, this thesis takes textual data transcribed from At the Scene of Trial of CCTV12 as research object, employs Praat speech analysis software as research instrument, and chooses randomly488 imperative sentences of criminal case to empirically study its intonation features of pragmatic functions. It is found that,(1)the kind of imperative sentence's focus has a close relationship with its pragmatic function. In terms of judges, the pragmatic function is realized by whether the intonation nucleus takes the same position as imperative subjects or not, which can be classified as emphasizing function and reminding function, and it is limited by procedural principle, economic principle, polite principle and clear principle; In terms of public prosecutors, the realization of their pragmatic functions is influenced by pragmatic intentions, which mainly contains emphasizing function, reminding function and warning function; In terms of defenders, their pragmatic functions of imperative sentence are realized by the position of intonation nucleus and statement focus, sorting into requesting function, suggesting function and asking function.Defenders always convey their strong imperative wills to the court by changing the stress focus in order to realize the best communicative purpose.(2)the realization of imperative sentence's pragmaticfunctions in courtroom context is primarily limited by the speaker's identity in trial. The speaker's identity will not only change imperative sentence's form and content, but also the intonation to make the utterance. Therefore,by the intonation feature of attitude, this thesis makes a further exploration on identity characteristics in institutional conversations.Imperative sentence plays a very important role during the progress of trial. It shows rich pragmatic functions under the cooperation of Chinese intonation's focusing and attitudinal feature.During the process of analyzing imperative sentence's pragmatic function in courtroom discourse, this thesis also find that context can influence the realization of these functions in some ways.By interpreting context and identity,it hopes to provide some theoretical and practical reference value for the judicial practice.
