| This thesis aims to develop English–Chinese translation skills in the course of constructing both bounded and unbounded entities from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics.Based on the Theory of Boundedness,a given linguistic structure must be constructed or construed within either a bounded domain or an unbounded domain. As a matter of fact, boundedness is ubiquitously pervasive in linguistic entities at both macro and micro levels. Thus, boundedness is a notional variable indispensable to any linguistic entity or linguistic construction in reading, writing and translation.Accordingly, three research questions are addressed as follows:(1)What is characterized by an English predicative structure ?(2)What are the similarities and differences between English and Chinese bounded predicative structures?(3)What kinds of translation skills can be employed for English bounded precative structures in English-Chinese translation? In order to answer the three research questions, the Theory of Boundedness is adopted as the theoretical framework for a detail analysis.Firstly,it is revealed that the constrains on the construction of bounded entities can be categorized into two types. One is the internal constrains, namely the internal factors related to tense or aspect. The other type refers to those factors related to context and sentence elements, such as objects, adverbials and complements.Next,it is found that there are three devices used for the construction of bounded predicative structures, namely tense & aspect, syntactical construction and contextual construction.Thirdly,it is shown that both Chinese and English bounded predicative structures are constructed with the same devices but they are different in light of both semantic structures and syntactic structures. To this regard, three translation skills are developed to deal with the construction or construal of bounded entities or unbounded entities in the course of English-Chinese translation as follows:(1)the concord method,(2)the method of adjustment,and(3)the semantic method. The research concludes by claiming that the research of this kind is of some help to Cognitive Linguistics,English teaching & research in China, and translation studies. It is hoped that more research of its kind will be conducted to integrate the theory of Cognitive Linguistics with translation practice in the future for a better target of learning translation. |
