Translation Strategies Between Chinese-english "Entity + Color" Compound Words:a Study Based On Structural Comparison

The“entity+color”compound words widely exist in both English and Chinese language.Thereof,the similarity of the two languages is:there are words in the English language that correspond one-to-one with the Chinese color compound words,such as“lemon-yellow(柠檬黄níngméng huáng),sky-blue(天蓝tiānlán),olive-green(橄榄绿gǎnlǎn lǜ),baby-blue(婴儿蓝yīngér lán)”;the specialty of the two language is:some Chinese“entity+color”compound words do not have one-to-one correspondence in English language,such as“石绿shílǜ(stone-green?),牡丹红mǔdān hóng(peony-red?),磁青cíqīng(porcelain-green?),荔枝红lìzhīhóng(lycheered?)”.Firstly,this paper uses some “entity + color” compound words from the American Contemporary English Corpus(COCA),focusing on the structural comparison of Chinese-English “entity + color” compound words.Thereof,from the perspective of cognition theory,this paper finds out that there are existing similarities in the naming rationale between Chinese-English “entity + color” compound words,both of which are mostly transformed through categorization.Secondly,from the perspective of semantics,the Chinese-English “entity + color” compound words are constructed by Arguments(Entities)and the value of the attribute of Color.So the paper finds out the construction method between Chinese-English “entity + color” compound words are similar.Thirdly,according to above naming rationale and construction method,this paper additionally classifies Chines-English “entity + color” respectively into two groups.Finally,based on the structural comparison between Chinese-English “entity + color” compound words,this paper uses such kind of “entity + color” compound words in the Chinese novel collection Love in the Fallen City,along with its translation Love in the Fallen City and Other Stories.From the perspective of translation study,this paper deliberately analyzes specific translation strategies adopted by the English translator Karen S.Kingsbury.As for the normal Chinese “entity + color” compound words,Karen mostly adopted literal translation strategy,while as for the special Chinese “entity + color” compound words,she adopted various translation strategies,including creative translation,literal translation and adaptive translation.This paper,combining linguistics studies and translation studies,examine the Chinese-English “entity + color” compound words from a new perspective.Thus,this paper promotes Chinese-English lexical studies,language research and translation practice to some extent.
