Nowadays,the reputation and influence of Chinese biopics are both in a poor situation.Biopics with official ideology are being steadily produced while not widely acknowledged by the public and other types of biopics are also under-appreciated,with is in contrast with the situation of biopics in western countries.There is no doubt that biopics have become a weakness of Chinese film production.Focusing on biopics in the last decade,this essay goes through the dilemma of this film genre and tries to make a way out of it.The first part of this essay looks back upon the history of biopics production in Mainland China and finds that there is an extremely unbalanced structure of development.The second part of the essay explores the dilemma of biopics production,which includes the cultural context,film system and narratives of biopics.At the end of this essay,four strategies are put forward in hopes to benefit the development of biopics production in Mainland China.The essay sheds light on the dilemma of biopics production from several new perspectives rather than the text of biopics which is used to be examined.Furthermore,issues such as the characteristics of biopics and how to make a biopic are also included.
