It has been found nowadays that oral English expression has been one of the weakest competences for English learners and also been seen as an obstacle for interpreting learners, translation majors in Bachelor of Translation and Interpretation(BTI)especially. However, what's the relationship between oral expression competence and interpreting competence? How do they affect each other? More efforts are still needed on these questions.2018 has witnessed the launch of China's Standards of English Language Ability(CSE)which concludes interpreting competence into the scope of the investigation, making more operational for the study of the relationship between language competence and interpreting competence. In this case, this study aims to investigate the relationship between oral expression competence and interpreting competence of BTI students(the third-and fourth-year)based on the CSE self-assessment(SA)scales.And following three research questions are answered:(1)What are the levels of BTI students' oral expression competence based on the CSESASOE?(2)What are the levels of BTI students' interpreting competence based on the CSE-SASIA?(3)What is the relationship between oral expression competence and interpreting competence? The researcher first conducts a correlation analysis of the measures of participants' SA competences and their TEM-4 scores and adopts Rasch analysis methods to test the reliability and validity of two SA scales used in the study. Then, the correlation and regression analyses of participants' SA measures,as well as the content analysis of a semi-structured interview are made to investigate the participants' overall oral expression competence, overall interpreting competence, and the relationship between both. The findings of the thesis show as the followings:(1)the reliability and internal and external validity of both scales are satisfactory;(2)the oral expression competence of the third-and fourth-year participants is basically at the CSE level 4,5,6;the interpreting competence of the third-year participants is at the CSE level 5 and 6,that of the fourth-year participants is at the CSE level 6 and 7;(3)oral expression competence at the CSE level 4 significantly correlates with interpreting competence embodied in elementary interpreting like liaison interpreting;oral expression competence at the CSE level 6 and 7 is significantly correlated with interpreting competence required in such mid-or high-ranking interpreting as consecutive or simultaneous interpreting;(4)participants' oral expression competence is found significantly correlated with their interpreting competence, and the former has an explanatory, predictive power on the latter. Moreover, students share some common self-perception of problems during oral expression and interpreting learning in topic familiarity, logical consistency, words and expressions, pronunciation and tone, fluency, appropriateness, and accuracy, etc. The study explores the relationship between the oral expression competence and interpreting competence of BTI students. It can help students know more about their oral expression competence and interpreting competence and adjust their study plan accordingly. Also, the research findings can function as a reference to the improvement of curricular design and teaching methods of BTI education. What's more, this study based on the CSE self-assessment scales can help verify the self-assessment scales so as to promote their application.
