Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Polysemy Under The Guidance Of Prototype Theory

As the normal language phenomenon,polysemy has been the popular topic discussed in the field of linguistics.Most researches start with Cognitive Linguistics,which shows the great advantage for analyzing the polysemy structure.Polysemy features complex and various senses,which causes the difficulty for translating it necessarily.However,most related researches on polysemy mainly focus on the interpretation of it or implication for teaching,as for the translation of polysemy,there is far too little attention.The translation report analyzes the English-Chinese translation practice of polysemy under the guidance of prototype theory in order to ensure the accuracy of the translation of polysemy.Based on the translation material named Translation as Communication across Languages and Cultures,the polysemous nouns and verbs from the second part of the book is chosen as the object of study.The translator mainly concludes the translation strategy of polysemy and constructs the suitable analysis mode for the translation of polysemy through representing the translation process of certain cases.According to prototype theory,the prototype sense of the polysemy determined by individual cognition is the typical exemplar of the semantic category formed around this polysemy.Other senses of the polysemy are extended through analyzing prototype sense and keeping the maximum similarity of prototype feature.Based on three meaning extension modes including concatenation,radiation and concatenation plus radiation,the meaning extension process from prototype sense to derived senses has been well established,which can eventually guide the translation.Under the guidance of prototype theory,the translator has learned the suitable translation strategies and the ability to translate the polysemy has been improved.The translation of polysemy conducted under the analysis mode of prototype theory can ensure the accurate word meaning and semantic coherence.Figure 18;Table 0;Reference 48...
