A Report On The E-C Translation Of In Search Of England(Chapter 1-2)from The Perspective Of George Steiner's Hermeneutic Theory Of Translation

The travelogue is warmly welcomed by readers for its introduction of natural landscape,local customs and practices with clear and elegant words.In all ages,there is a huge mass of travelogues produced both at home and abroad.On domestic market,however,not many foreign travelogue works have been introduced for some realistic reasons,thus creating a huge potential demand for translation.The translation text analyzed in this thesis is excerpted from In Search of England,a book authored by a well-known British writer Henry Vollam Morton.Since its publication in 1927,the book has caused a huge sensation in the UK and once became a bestseller.Nevertheless,no English version has been found in China for almost a century,not to speak of a translated one.Therefore,the book is worth being translated into a Chinese one to some extent.This thesis,with the first and second chapter of In Search of England as examples,is going to discuss the E-C translation of travelogue works from the perspective of George Steiner's hermeneutic theory of translation,which has at its core the fourfold hermeneutic motion: initial trust,aggression,incorporation and compensation.In translating travelogue,translators need to initially trust the original text,that is,to choose appropriate text,and they must have enough language and cultural capacity to translate the text at the same time.Secondly,translators need to “invade” the text from aspects of proper nouns and sentences in an attempt to fully fathom the original text,break through the literal meaning and dig deep into the author's true intentions.Then,translators need to incorporate the form or contents of the source text so as to accurately and completely present all the information in the target language without failure.Eventually,translators need to compensate the information and style through direct annotation,indirect amplification and appropriate rewriting so that imbalance between the translator and the original text in the translation process can be restored.
