Lu Tingcan's Sequel to the Classic of Tea in the Qing Dynasty is another masterpiece of China's tea classics after The Classic of Tea written by Lu Yu in the Tang Dynasty.It is further supplement and development of the record of the tea culture in China.According to its catalog,Sequel to the Classic of Tea completely duplicated the structure of The Classic of Tea,dividing the content into ten chapters according to different themes.In stark contrast to the fact that extensive and multi-angle studies of The Classic of Tea exist,the academic circles have far less research on the source text of Sequel to the Classic of Tea and in recent years,studies are insufficient with regard to the only English version of Sequel to the Classic of Tea.This is the very starting point of this research.It is planned to study the English version of Sequel to the Classic of Tea from another translation theory's perspective.As Sequel to the Classic of Tea is too long,this study only treats its interrelated chapters 2 and 4 as the research scope in the expectation to enrich studies on the English translation of Sequel to the Classic of Tea and to discuss the translation studies of Chinese classics.The macro theoretical framework in this study is the theory of translation norms proposed by the famous Israeli translation theorist Gideon Toury.Its core is the concept of "norm".The "norm"proposed by Toury refers to the constraints and influences on the translator in the entire translation process.It includes norms both at the linguistic and at the social and cultural level.Toury himself divided it into three categories,namely initial norm,preliminary norm and operational norm.This study finds that the translator,for the comprehensive transmittance of some Chinese cultural elements to target readers,takes into account "adequacy",in pursuing "acceptability".From the second perspective,the factors deciding the translator's choice of Sequel to the Classic of Tea for translation include but are not limited to the "going out" strategy of Chinese culture and the rapid development of English translation of Chinese classics.From the last perspective,the translator is largely influenced by the idea of "Conveying the meaning in its full flavor" by Prof.Wang Rongpei,one great predecessor in the field of translation of Chinese classics in China.Using such strategies and techniques as explicitation,extension,substitution,addition,repetition,transformation,and rhetorical devices,the translator strives to achieve the"Conveying the meaning in its full flavor",state in the target text.Moreover,some problems are found in the English version which can be attributed to the following four aspects:immoderate addition in the target text,missing information of the original in the target text,mistranslation and grammar-related problem.Accordingly,the study proposes revision suggestions.Applying Toury's theory of translation norms,on the one hand,this study describes and explains the English translation of some chapters of Sequel to the Classic of Tea,which in turn proves the feasibility of the three-layer theoretical model Toury' s translation norm-conveying the meaning in its full flavor-explicitation serving researches on the translation of Chinese tea classics.On the other hand,it investigates the realization degree of“Conveying the meaning in its full flavor" in the version and the translation problems in it,providing certain enlightenment to translation teaching and researchers in the field of translation of Chinese classics.
