Reading is an important part of language learning. For a long time, developing students' reading ability has always been a very important part of the high school English learning. In spite of more requirements for reading ability and extracurricular reading in The New Curriculum Standard, students also get sick in English reading with a small amount of reading. And most teachers are willing to focus on developing test-taking skills rather than pay more attention to improving students' reading habits, interest and extracurricular reading skill. Therefore, how to improve the English reading ability of high school students is particularly necessary. This paper tries to use the “i+1” principle proposed by Krashen's “input hypothesis” theory and the “quantitative change and qualitative change law” in philosophy to discuss three questions as follow:1)Can the amount of extracurricular reading increased help students develop reading habits?2)Can the amount of extracurricular reading increased help to stimulate student's interest and reading motivation?3)Can the amount of extracurricular reading increased improve students' reading grade? The study chooses two classes(one is experimental class, while the other is the control class)from the first grade of senior high school,Guiyang Peiwen School in Peking University to do a three-month experiment.Students(34 students in the experimental class,32 students in the control class)are selected as research participants. Before the experiment, both the students in two classes are pre-tested,and 117 senior high school students from four schools and 16 teachers from six schools in Guiyang are surveyed by questionnaire. The current situation of students' English reading and teachers' teaching deficiencies are analyzed and teaching plans and objectives are formulated. In the experiment, reading strategies in class and increasing extracurricular reading and making reading report outside class are adopted in the experimental class, while the traditional reading pedagogy for teaching reading is used in the control class. After the experiment, the scores in pre-test and post-test are analyzed by SPSS,and the results show the possibility of increasing extracurricular reading can improve the students' reading grade.Based on the research, the study shows that increasing the amount of extracurricular reading can improve the English reading ability of senior high school students, and help them to increase their interest in English reading and build their confidence of learning English.Hopefully, this research can provide ideas to English teacher's reading teaching, and provide thinking of other researchers' studies.
