Depression has always been one of the most common and prominent problems in psychological research.Undergraduates are in the early stages of adulthood, and they are prone to strong psychological conflicts, which may lead to depression and other negative emotions.According to the theory of emotion suppression, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between subjective social status and depression mood in college students by combining a cross-sectional survey of 1083 undergraduates in the first study with a longitudinal tracking study of 699 freshmen in the second study. The study found that:(1)The results of study 1 show that the subjective social status of male students is significantly higher than that of female students;the subjective social status of rural students is lower than that of urban students;the subjective social status of sophomores and juniors is lower than that of freshmen, the expressive suppression of sophomores and juniors is higher than that of freshmen, the depression mood of sophomores and juniors is higher than that of freshmen. The subjective social status of college students is negatively correlated with depression mood;the subjective social status is negatively correlated with expressive suppression;and the expressive suppression is positively correlated with depression mood. The direct effect of subjective social status on depression mood is significant, and the mediating effect of expressive suppression between subjective social status and depression mood is also significant, with the mediating effect value of-0.063.(2)The results of study 2 show that the subjective social status of freshmen in the pre-test is lower than that in the post-test;the expressive suppression in the pre-test is higher than that in the post-test;and the depression mood in the pre-test is lower than that in the post-test.The subjective social status of the pre-test can significantly negatively predict the expressive suppression of the post-test,that is,the subjective social status of the pre-test is the cause of the expressive suppression of the post-test;the expressive suppression of the pre-test can significantly predict the post-test depression mood, that is,the expressive suppression of the pre-test is the cause of the post-test depression mood;expressive suppression has a significant mediating effect between subjective social status and depression mood among freshmen. In conclusion, the results of both horizontal and longitudinal research show that the theory of expressive suppression is also applicable to oriental people who are good at suppression emotion, and to the changes of depressive mood in a short period of time. The results of this study expand the study of Cheng et al.,the reason why freshmen with low subjective social status have more depression mood is that expressive suppression plays a mediating role in it.
