Events,as knowledge representation units reflecting the changing state of objects,play an essential role in semantic understanding.Using events and event relations between events to represent knowledge can enrich human understanding of real-world laws.The concept of events has gradually come to be used in such knowledge processing fields as computational linguistics,artificial intelligence,information retrieval,information extraction,automatic abstracting and natural language processing.As a new semantic analytic theory,event semantics has attracted widespread attention in recent years.Different from previous natural language processing theories,event semantics takes events,rather than traditional language units(e.g.,word,phrase,sentence),as the research objects.Through the description of event elements,event structures,event relations,and event chains,event semantics can achieve semantic analysis and semantic reasoning.Thus,event semantics has many advantages in the semantic processing of texts.However,the application of event semantics theory to semantic understanding of texts or discourses is still in its infancy,and the application of event semantics in the classroom teaching domain is even less common.Therefore,this study conducts a thorough and detailed research of English-language classroom teaching from the perspective of event semantics to explore the semantic information of classroom discourse and the evolutionary process of classroom teaching.First,classroom teaching events in the observed cases are identified,and a formalized description of event structures is given.Then,the event relations between classroom teaching events are analyzed.Finally,based on events,event elements,and event relations,an event structure model is constructed for the English-language classroom teaching domain.Through the analysis of classroom teaching events in this study,the author draws the following conclusions: 1)event semantics theory can formally describe English-teaching classrooms,which is a new idea for study of formalization;2)we can formally describe classroom teaching events through six elements(event body,participant,time,space,number and situation)to highlight significant events and their relations;and,3)the main event relations in this study are inclusive,causal,following and concurrent relation.Formalized descriptions of English-language classroom events can show the evolutionary paths of classroom teaching activities.The application of event semantics in classroom teaching is of great significance to broadening the research path of event semantics and its application in specific fields.Moreover,this thesis can provide guidance for teachers' teaching and training,students' learning,and the formulation of relevant education policies.
