Reading is not only an important way for us to acquire language knowledge but also an indispensable part of English language learning.Therefore,reading teaching plays an important role in English teaching.It was stressed that the new curriculum reform should attach importance to the cultivation of students' reading comprehension ability in the Opinions on Comprehensively Deepening the Curriculum Reform and Implementing the Fundamental Task of Strengthening Moral Education and Cultivating People issued by the Ministry of Education.In this thesis,constructivism theory and zone of proximal development theory are adopted to study the application of scaffolding teaching mode to English reading teaching in rural junior middle schools.The research questions in this thesis are as follows:1.Can scaffolding teaching mode improve the rural junior middle school students' interest in English reading and their reading performance?2.What scaffolding teaching modes are suitable for rural junior middle school English reading teaching activities?The quasi-experimental research design is adopted in this thesis.The subjects of this research are 86 students of Grade 9 from two classes in Shuangshan Middle School,Jinhaihu New District,Bijie City,Guizhou Province.Class One is the experimental class and Class Two is the controlled class.The number of students and the proportion of boys and girls in the two classes are similar,and the students' learning interest,learning attitude and learning strategies are relatively similar.The author worked out the students' zone of proximal development and determined suitable teaching modes for the students.The data was collected and analyzed through pre-test,post-test,questionnaire survey and interview to explore the practical effect of scaffolding teaching mode on English reading teaching in rural junior middle schools.There are two findings through the research:1.Scaffolding teaching mode not only improves rural junior middle school students' interest in English reading but also improves the students' English reading performance.2.Thescaffolding teaching modes,such as problem mode,suggestion mode,example mode,legend mode,situation mode,emotion mode,strategy mode,tool mode and chart mode,are suitable for the rural junior middle school students.However,different application of these modes should be adopted in different English reading teaching activities.This thesis is composed of the following six chapters:Chapter 1 Introduction:The research background,purpose and significance are introduced.Chapter 2 Literature Review: Firstly,the current situation of English reading teaching in junior middle school is introduced.Secondly,the research status of scaffolding teaching mode at home and abroad is introduced.Finally,the scaffolding teaching mode is expoundedby adopting constructivism theory and zone of proximal development theory.Chapter 3 Research Design: The research subject,research questions,research tools and research process are stated in details.Chapter 4 Research Case: Through the teaching design of a unit,theapplication of scaffolding teaching mode is demonstrated in detail.Chapter 5 Results Analysis and Discussions: The results of pre-test,post-test,post-questionnaire survey and interview are analyzed.Chapter 6 Research Conclusion: The main findings,corresponding suggestions of the research and the limitations of the researchare stated.
