On Shifts Of Person Deixis And Pragmatic Functions In Premier's Press Conference Interpreting

Language is the media of human communication.In language communication,person deixis plays an important role.Person deixis is reference of person.A right choice of person deixis enables message to be better delivered and facilitates the understanding of communicative parties.Through the change of person deixis,the speaker can indicate his or her attitude and emotion change so as to achieve his or her purpose.Undoubtedly,the choice and comprehension of person deixis need take communicative context as basis.Interpreting,an activity involving multiple languages and parties,will have its context change in real time.Sometimes,interpreter will make shifts on person deixis out of particular needs or to achieve intended purpose of the speaker.These shifts will lead to the transfer of deictic center,thus giving play to certain pragmatic functions and delivering certain effects so as to show the attitude of the speaker and meet the communicative purpose.This thesis takes transcription of on-site consecutive interpreting of premier's press conference after Two Sessions as corpus and selects six years' interpreting,i.e.2003,2004,2005,2009,2013,2018,as research objects.With relevant theories of context and person deixis,it conducts analysis on person deixis shifts made by interpreters,exploring effects and pragmatic functions of those shifts in interpreting.First,the author extracts all person deixis shifts in six years' interpreting and classifies them according to the shift form through the comparison between premier's source speech and interpreters' interpreting.On this basis,the author zooms in on context of every shift for detailed analysis and finds that some person deixis shifts will lead to the shift of speaker's perspective.Therefore,it will move closer to one side,shortening psychological distance between them or separate the two sides,making clear its own attitude and position.Besides,subjectivity of the speaker in the speech can be strengthened via some shifts,which can make the statement more potent.According to analysis results,the author comes into conclusion that three pragmatic functions will be delivered by person deixis shift in interpreting,namely,pragmatic empathy,pragmatic de-empathy and strengthening of subjective statement.In short,person deixis will play some unconventional pragmatic functions in specific context rather than pure reference.For one thing,it equips the interpreting with same functions of source speech;for another,it enables speaker's intention to be achieved.
