Research To The Design Of Functional Games Concerning Intangible Cultural Heritage

The rapid development of digital games has brought a powerful boost to China's economic growth,but the proliferation of games based on entertainment purposes has also brought many sharp problems.The fierce condemnation of such digital games mainly serving as casual entertainments has prompted the Chinese game production enterprises to turn their attention to the development of functional games,that is to say,to create games that would play positive value and would realize the social responsibility of enterprises.Since the beginning of 2018,China's digital game industry such as Tencent and Netease has begun to officially announce the new digital game category of "functional games” for the purpose of promoting the transformation and upgrading of the game industry,which,of course,has aroused the concern of the whole society.At present,the layout of functional games has formed a preliminary scale in many fields,especially in terms of games revealing traditional culture,among which games with the theme of China's intangible cultural heritage are the most eye-catching.Based on the support of digital media technology,such games use the unique artistic language of digital games to interpret the designated non-legacy culture digitally.Consequently,a new field for the inheritance and development of non-legacy culture has emerged.Through the inductive analysis of the four ICH-functional games collected(functional games concerning intangible cultural heritage),this thesis finds that this kind of game presents the following three features: firstly,the selection of game theme presents a multi-directional cross-extension;secondly,the focus of games' content has changed from a collection of cultural segments to a comprehensive display of culture in a whole,and in the mean time,the game design has synergistically highlighted both "playability" and "functionality";lastly,it deeply analyzed the interpretational design of translating intangible cultural heritage into a functional game and thus summarized the following three paths,namely the expression of intangible cultural heritage,the visual transformation of intangible cultural heritage as well as the design of experiencing intangible cultural heritage in games.In the end,to understand the broad social significance of such games,this thesis pointed out their social functions in the fields of the essential layer,the target layer and the derivative layer.
