Study On Kenneth Rexroth's Translation Of Chu Shu Chen's Poems From The Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

Kenneth Rexroth has “seven images”.He is a writer,translator,cultural critic,revolutionary activist,social dreamer,and he is also an abstract painter and an anarchist in the 20 th century.Well-known for absorbing various eastern and western cultures,he has translated many Chinese poems into English,which plays an important role in the dissemination,exchange and integration of Chinese classical poetry in foreign cultures.To some extent,at that time,maybe only Pound could compete with him,therefore,there is still great academic value and significance in studying him.This thesis aims to study Kenneth Rexroth's English translation of Chu Shu Chen's poems from the perspective of Manipulation Theory,revealing the main characteristics and thoughts of his translation.Through studies,the author finds that in Kenneth Rexroth's translation,ideology and poetics play a more significant role than patronage.Under the requirement of specific era and with the help of Chu's poem's European versions and his friends who are not professional poem scholars,he chooses to translate Chu's poems under the guidance of his own feelings and intuitions about his emotional and life experience.Besides,there are some inappropriate translations in his translation,most of which are related to culturally-loaded words.The author hopes that this thesis will draw some Chinese and foreign translators' attention to Chu Shu Chen and her poems' translation,as well as Kenneth Rexroth and his translation of Chu's poems.It is also hoped that this thesis can provide some reflections and insights for Chinese and foreign scholars who study Chinese classical poetry,and contribute to the dissemination,exchange and integration of Chinese traditional culture with foreign cultures.
