Listening ability is one of the most basic skills that students must master in foreign language learning,and the improvement of students' listening ability is an essential part of English language teaching.Listening ability and listening materials are mutually promoted and restricted.Traditional listening materials selected in class are incapable of cultivating students' listening ability.How to select listening materials is a problem that everyone will encounter in listening activities.And the quality of listening materials is closely related to the improvement of listening ability.The selection of listening materials plays an important role in the improvement of students' listening ability.Therefore,researches on selection criteria of listening materials matter a lot.This thesis aims to provide middle school English teachers with proper and standardized English listening material selection criteria to guide them selecting more good listening materials in English class.To test the appropriateness of the selection criteria,the researcher put forward three research questions as follows,first,what are the students' attitude toward the existing selection criteria? second,what are the teachers' attitude toward the existing selection criteria? third,what suggestions do teachers have for existing listening material selection criteria? As a school-based study,guided by the Input Hypothesis,the Affective Filter Hypothesis and the Immersion Education Theory,this research took 286 students and 29 English teachers in Xi'an Foreign Language School as research participants.And the research mainly used questionnaires and interviews to collect research data.From the data analysis,the research found that firstly,students agreed and supported the existing listeningmaterials selection criteria,secondly,the existing listening materials selection criteria also received general support from teachers,and lastly,the existing listening material selection criteria were considered comprehensive and systematic,which met the practical needs of junior high school English listening materials selection.Therefore,it can be concluded that the appropriateness of the existing listening material selection criteria is good.And the existing listening material selection criteria can be applied to junior high school English listening materials selection,which will guide middle school English teachers to select more good listening materials.At the end of this thesis,some recommendations were provided for selecting listening materials,aiming to make some contributions to junior middle school English listening teaching.
