With the popularity of English in the world,how to carry out effective English teaching is becoming more and more important for English educators and English reading teaching is the focus of English teaching in junior high and high schools.However,the current junior high school English reading teaching still focuses on the vocabulary,phrases,sentence patterns,the literal meaning of the text and the language recognition level of translation.As a result,the students' thinking disposition is monolithic,which hinders the development of their abilities.This thesis focuses on using some critical thinking skills in the process of English reading teaching to cultivate students' critical reading thinking and to improve students' reading ability,thus optimizing English reading class teaching.Questions discussed in this study are:(1)What is the impact of junior high school English reading teaching on the students' reading level under the guidance of critical thinking?(2)What is the effect of optimizing junior high school English reading teaching based on critical thinking?(3)How can teachers optimize junior high school English reading teaching by cultivating students' critical thinking ability to analyze,reason,judge,evaluate and summarize in the class? The study uses some research methods,including questionnaires,tests and classroom observations and so on.The author of this thesis sets A and B as the experimental groups.There are 37 students in each class.The subjects are from the two classes in Grade 9 of a junior high school in Zhenjiang City.Among them,Class A is the experimental class,in which the reading teaching method of critical thinking is used to teach students English reading,and Class B is the traditional English reading teaching mode class.Before the experiment,the students' English reading level test and the questionnaire about the status of English reading study were conducted simultaneously for the twoclasses.The results of the English reading level obtained in these two classes were similar,and the students' English reading and learning status were also almost the same.After analyzing the results of this study,the author will discuss whether the level of English reading for students can be significantly improved based on critical thinking teaching.At the same time,the author also analyzes and studies a large number of lesson cases,aiming to explore how teachers can develop students' critical thinking ability in English reading classroom teaching to help them improve their ability of analysis,reasoning,judgment,evaluation and summarization,so as to optimize the classroom teaching of English reading class.Through the analysis of questionnaires and statistical software SPSS,this study comes to the following conclusions:(1)Students' reading level has been improved under the guidance of critical thinking.In other words,it is effective to improve the Students' reading level.(2)The application of critical thinking in junior high school English reading teaching not only can stimulate students' interest in learning,but also can help improve students' reading ability.(3)In the process of English reading teaching,teachers can consciously pay attention to cultivating students' critical thinking to help students improve their reading ability,thus optimizing their own reading teaching.This study provides a certain theoretical foundation for optimizing English reading teaching in the future junior high school's English reading teaching by cultivating students' critical thinking ability.The thesis may have some limitations and the author will continue to follow up on this research and suggests that future researchers should consider the influences of other factors on the optimization of English reading classroom teaching except the critical thinking.
