Information Compensation And Ellipsis In E-C Translation From The Perspective Of Thematic Progression

Translation is a cross-cultural communication activity that includes the process of information transfer and information conversion.On one hand,restricted by the subjective and objective factors,translation loss happens at the culture level,linguistic level and aesthetic level in this process.Compensation is an effective way to make up for translation loss.On the other hand,under the economy principle of language,ellipsis is another means applied in translation process to avoid duplication and redundancy.Ellipsis and compensation are pretty commonly used methods in translation,which help to attain accuracy and coherence,as well the maximum equivalence and the economy of language of translation.Under the guidance of Thematic Progression,this thesis discusses the ellipsis and compensation strategies in translation supplemented by some examples in chapter three excerpted from Why We Can't Afford the Rich? On the ground of Newmark's text typology,the source text in this thesis is an information text.“ Content before form ”and “ Readers first ” are significant characteristics of informative texts,which make the informative text concentrate more on content transfer and readers' understanding of the text.The large usage of long difficult sentences and paragraphs in the source text,to a certain degree,increase readers' difficulties in understanding of it.Guided by the theory of Thematic Progression,this thesis is analyzing the thematic progression patterns of the source text to survey the ellipsis and compensation strategies under different thematic progression patterns in the project.This study mainly focuses on the compensation and ellipsis.The analysis of compensation mainly develops from the perspective of word,syntax and text.The author also analyzes the ellipsis in terms of linking verbs and structure words.These two strategies are aiming at transferring information accurately and economically and trying to realize the cohesion and coherence of the text.
