Research On Tangjiang Town Chamber Of Commerce And Social Change In The Period Of The Republic Of China

Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce is the result of the local social and economic development and of the rectification and reorganization of civil society organizations by the Kuomintang Government.Since the founding of the Republic of China(1912-1949),Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce experienced the historical process from Tangjiang Commercial Branch,Tangjiang Chamber of Commerce to Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce.To sort out and analyze the organization evolution of Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce,the relationship between Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce and local society,local government during 1934-1949,it can be seen the social changes of Tangjiang Town in the middle and late period of the Republic of China.In 1934,the Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce was reorganized.The Chamber actively responded to the government's policies,cooperated with the national government's economic control policies,and maintained the wartime market order.It also supported the army,raise public debt to support the government.Besides,it took the social responsibility and participated in security and health education undertakings and charitable public welfare activities in Tangjiang;it contributed its own strength to the final victory of Anti-Japanese War.In addition,the Chamber made its own contribution to the local economic development and social stability during the war.At the end of the Anti-Japanese War,Tangjiang Town had been looted by the Japanese army and suffered heavy losses.In order to restore social order and economy as soon as possible,the Chamber of Commerce,guided by Nankang County Government,set up an office for the reorganization,and re-elected its supervisors in accordance with the Chamber of Commerce Law.However,with the outbreak of the Liberation War(1945-1949),due to the heavy taxes imposed by the Kuomintang government,the Chamber communicated with the Nankang County Government many times,but it did not work.In addition,because the commodity price ran out of control,trade associations and businesses declared bankruptcy and applied for closure or suspension.Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce finally stopped functioning during the time of the political turmoil,social disorder and business decline.Generally speaking,from 1934 to 1949,the relationship between Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce and Nankang County Government was complex and dynamic,which was also a portrayal of the relationship between the Chamber of Commerce and the government during the period of Nanjing National Government.At the same time,there was a close interaction between Tangjiang Town Chamber of Commerce and local society,and this interaction also had an important impact on the social changes of Tangjiang Town during this period.
