Reading,as one of the four basic skills of English learning,has always been the focus and difficulty of English teaching.However,the current situation of English reading teaching in junior high school is not satisfactory.Students' reading ability is affected mainly by the following reasons: students lack interest in reading,the reading method adopted by teachers who teach English reading is mechanized,and teachers do not provide systematic guidance for reading.The proposal of narrow reading brings new enlightenment to English reading teaching.Narrow reading which is proposed by Krashen in 1981,is a strategy for learners to improve their reading ability by reading a large number of articles of the same topic,the same style,or a certain writer.In this study,the author adopts narrow reading method,trying to change the students' English reading mode,so as to improve students' English reading ability and enthusiasm,and at the same time to cultivate students' good reading habits.This study mainly discusses the following three questions:1.What is the junior high school students' attitude towards English narrow reading teaching?2.What are the effects of narrow reading on junior high school students' English reading ability?3.How does narrow reading influence the English reading interest and confidence of junior high school students?This study combines qualitative analyses and quantitative analyses.Questionnaires and tests are included in the quantitative research part and interview is the main instrument of qualitative research in this research.According to the dataanalysis and discussion,the author has gained the following major findings:Firstly,most junior high school students have a positive attitude towards narrow reading.After the experiment,most students in the experimental class expressed their willingness to continue to adopt the narrow reading mode.Secondly,narrow reading teaching can improve students' reading grades while improving students' reading ability.The repeated vocabulary in narrow reading expands students' vocabulary and improves their vocabulary memory;The accumulation of background knowledge helps students form relevant schema in their minds,making it easier for students to understand articles on related topics;The summary of the structure and genre of the article in the narrow reading teaching mode improves the students' ability of discourse analysis;Teachers' guidance on students' reading methods helps students use reading strategies better and improve students' reading skills.Thirdly,narrow reading can improve students' reading interest and confidence.It reduces the difficulty of reading materials to a certain extent.Through repeated vocabulary and background knowledge,as well as interesting and life-related material content,narrow reading reduces students' reading anxiety and reading disorder,thus improving students' reading confidence and interest.
