Embarrassment is a complex self-conscious emotion which is different from the basic emotion.It is also an important social emotion,which affects the individual's cooperative and helpful interaction in many social situations.From the point of view of the emotional experiencer,the relationship between individual embarrassment and prosocial behavior is very different.Some studies have confirmed that embarrassment can promote individual prosocial behavior;some studies have reached the conclusion of inhibition;at the same time,others believe that there is no correlation between individual embarrassment and prosocial behavior.From the standpoint of bystanders,empathic embarrassment refers to the embarrassment experience that bystanders "share the embarrassment of the parties" and experience similar to the embarrassment experience of the parties.Current research seldom explores the prosocial effect of empathy embarrassment from the perspective of bystanders.There are few studies at home and abroad on the impact of empathy embarrassment on individual prosocial behavior.So,what effect does embarrassment and empathy embarrassment have on individual prosocial behavior?Previous studies have shown that there is a close relationship between individual empathy ability and prosocial behavior,which is the key factor to motivate individuals to produce prosocial behavior.Will the individual's own empathy ability affect the individual's prosocial behavior in the experimental situation? This study introduced the variable of empathy trait to explore whether the influence of embarrassment and empathy embarrassment on individual prosocial behavior would be moderated by empathy ability.At present,most of the studies on embarrassment take primary school children,college students and adults as subjects,and lack of discussion on the development of embarrassment and its prosocial effect.The development of self-consciousness of middle school students in the period of "storms and rains" has entered the second leapperiod,and the self-consciousness emotion generated on the basis of self-consciousness has also undergone drastic changes.Therefore,exploring the characteristics of embarrassment development and its impact on prosocial behavior of students of this age group plays an important role in promoting the formation of their good character and the healthy development of their body and mind.Based on this,this study chooses middle school students as the research object.Because the scope of prosocial behavior research is too large,this study narrows it down to cooperative behavior,and explores the influence of embarrassment and empathic embarrassment on middle school students' cooperative behavior and the moderating role of empathic characteristics between them.Study 1 explores the influence of the level of empathy and embarrassment of middle school students on their cooperative behavior from the perspective of the parties.Two factors of 2×2 were used to design the experiment.Empathy traits(high and low)and emotional state(embarrassment and neutrality)were taken as independent variables,and cooperative behavior of middle school students was taken as dependent variables.The results show that individual embarrassment can inhibit the cooperative behavior of middle school students;individual empathy can promote the cooperative behavior of middle school students in neutral emotional state;the interaction between embarrassment and empathy is not significant,and the influence of embarrassment and empathy on cooperative behavior is independent.Study 2 explores the influence of the level of empathy traits and the state of empathy embarrassment on the cooperative behavior of middle school students from the perspective of bystanders.Two factors of 2 × 2 were used to design the experiment.Empathy traits(high and low)and emotional state(sympathetic embarrassment and neutrality)were taken as independent variables,and cooperative behavior of middle school students was taken as dependent variables.The results show that the individual sympathetic embarrassment can inhibit the cooperative behavior of middle school students;in the state of sympathetic embarrassment and neutral emotion,the individual sympathetic trait can promote the cooperative behavior of middle school students;the interaction between sympathetic embarrassment and sympathetic trait is not significant,and the influence ofsympathetic embarrassment and sympathetic trait on cooperative behavior is independent.Through two empirical studies,this study draws the following main conclusions:(1)Compared with the subjects in neutral emotional state,the subjects experiencing embarrassment showed less cooperative behavior,that is,individual embarrassment could inhibit the cooperative behavior of middle school students;(2)Compared with subjects in neutral emotional state,those experiencing sympathetic embarrassment showed less cooperative behavior,that is,individual sympathetic embarrassment could inhibit middle school students' cooperative behavior;(3)The higher the level of individual empathy traits,the more cooperative behaviors they show.Individual empathy traits can promote middle school students' cooperative behaviors.(4)The influence of embarrassment and sympathetic embarrassment on middle school students' cooperative behavior is not regulated by sympathetic traits.
