In order to fully reflect the value of English subject education and to cultivate English talents that can meet the needs of the society,the “High School English Curriculum Standards”(2017 edition)proposes that the purpose of high school English teaching is to cultivate students' key competency in English subject.Junior high school English teaching is the basic stage of middle school English teaching,and also aims to cultivate students' key competency in English subject.The key competency in English subject includes language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.And the learning ability mainly refers to student's active use of English learning strategies and adjustment to them,getting the ability of self-management in English learning,and striving to improve the awareness and ability of English learning efficiency.It can be seen that the improvement of students' learning ability mainly reflects the improvement of students' self-monitoring ability.English learning in junior high schools is the most crucial period for middle school English learning.It's critical for students to further their English learning well based on the foundation of English learning in junior high schools.Therefore,cultivating junior high school students' self-monitoring ability is a necessary condition for laying a good foundation for their English learning.This research questions are:(1)what is the current situation of rural junior high school students' self-monitoring ability in English learning?(2)Are there any differences of self-monitoring in English learning in gender and grades among rural junior high school students?(3)What is the relationship between students' English academic achievement and self-monitoring in English learning?This study used questionnaires and interviews to investigate 445 students' self-monitoring ability;they come from Grade Seven,Eight,Nine in two rural junior high schools in Zhoukou City,Henan Province.Based on the questionnaire survey;interviews with 20 students and 6 teachers were conducted to further confirm the result of the questionnaire.The results of the study show that:(1)The overall level of rural junior high school students' self-monitoring ability in English is low.The mean value is only 2.84,which is less than the average mean 3.This is also confirmed by the interview results of interviews with students and teachers.(2)The rural junior high school students' self-monitoring ability in English learning is significantly different in gender and different grades.Specifically,in terms of gender,the overall level of girls' self-monitoring is higher than boys',showing high level in the six aspects of self-monitoring;and in terms of grades,the ninth grade students' self-monitoring ability is higher than that of the eighth and seventh grade students,and the eighth grade students' self-monitoring ability is greater than that of seventh grades students'.(3)According to the analysis of the correlation between the mid-term English scores and the students' self-monitoring ability,which is concluded that the self-monitoring ability of junior high school students' English learning is positively correlated with their English academic achievement.The results of the study are helpful for teachers to have a better understanding for the current situation of rural junior high school students' self-monitoring ability in English learning.In addition,this paper also puts forward some teaching suggestions,points out the limitations of this study,and puts forward some suggestions for further research.
