Translation Methods Of "N+of+N" Phrases In E-C Translation

This report is to identify the relations of between Nounl and Noun2(to be precise,the noun prior to "of" is referred as Nounl and the noun after "of" is referred as Noun2)when the Nounl is transformed by verbs or adjectives from the perspective of English-Chinese(E-C)translation through discussing different classifications of of phrases and their translations,with samples taken from the translation project at issueThe research methods adopted in the report are literature review and case study The classifications of of phrases and their translation methods in previous research are compared before analyzing the relations between Nounl and Noun2 in E-C translation practice.The technique of translating different "N+of+N" phrases is illustrated in five categories.It is hoped that these methods can help translators improve their work.This report is based on the translation of Why We Can't Afford the Rich(Chapter 15 How the rule of the rich works,Chapter 16 Hiding it,Chapter 17 Legal corruption:above the law or making the law?).These three chapters mainly discuss how the rich capture the country,how the rich hide their wealth,and how the rich make the law.The relation between Nounl and Noun2 can be classified into 5 categories,which are logical subject-predicate relation,logical subject-verb-object-adverbial relation,logical verb-noun relation,ownership and logical subject-be-predicative relationThis report proposes that,in E-C translation,when the relation between Nounl and Noun2 is logical subject-predicate,Nounl should be shifted to a verb and Noun2 should be the subject.When the relation is logical subject-verb-object-adverbial,the Nounl should be shifted to a verb and the subject can be different.When the relation is logical verb-noun,Nounl should be shifted to a verb and Noun2 should be the object.When the relation is ownership,the position of Nounl and Noun2 should be exchanged.When the relation is logical subject-be-predicative,of can be translated into de in Chinese,or of phrases can be translated into sentences.Generally speaking,translators should analyze the context and then identify the relations between Nounl and Noun2.Through restructuring of these of phrases,the target Chinese may become more logically coherent.
