Ralph Vaughn Williams(1872-1958)is one of the most important representatives of the British new national music school in the 20 th century.It is of great significance to study and analyze Williams' works for us to have a deep understanding of the 20 th century British national music harmony techniques and musical styles.The vocal suite "on Wenlock Edge" is a work created by the composer when he went to Paris to follow the Impressionist composer Maurice Ravel in 1909.It is one of the works that can best reflecting the composer's diversified creative techniques.In this paper,the vocal suite is regarded as the research object.The first chapter is the introduction of the composer and the vocal suite,including the composer's life,the stage of creation,the background of creation,the brief introduction of the work,etc.The second chapter is an analysis and research on the mode.It's mainly analyzes the characteristics of harmonic techniques embodied in the use of tonal scales from two aspects of vertical superposition and horizontal alternation.The third chapter is mainly about the analysis and research of the tonality presentation and transfer techniques in the works.The research content is based on the composer's application of different tonality presentation and transfer techniques;The fourth chapter is about the chord structure.The research perspective is based on the application of triple and non triple stacked chords.Chapter five is about the research of the harmonic progression,mainly including parallel and half tone progression,etc.The conclusion mainly refines and sublimates the research of this work from three aspects.one is the overall harmonic thinking of Vaughn Williams,the other is the exploration of Vaughn Williams on the road to the revival of British national music,and the third is the enlightenment for the further development of Chinese national music.It is hoped that the research on the harmonic techniques of this work will help us to further understand the characteristics of British national music in the 20 th century.
