| In the second half of last century,the trend of “cultural turn” emerged in the western translation circle.The previous translation was mainly based on the internal factors such as language itself,and then turned to external factors such as social culture and background.Among them,the manipulation theory proposed by Lefevere has attracted the attention and research of many other translation theorists.The theory holds that the influence of ideology,poetics and patronage on translation cannot be ignored.Under the restriction of the three factors,the translation strategies or methods adopted by translators will be affected to some extent.This theory opens a new door for translation studies.Brave New World was written by English author Aldous Huxley in 1931 and published in 1932.As one of the world's most classic dystopian works,the novel mainly describes a future world in which people live a comfortable life and material life is greatly satisfied.But at the same time,because the core concept of this society is the unity and stability,everything in people's life is restricted and shackled under the unified standard,without individual thoughts,cognition and emotions.The book received a great deal of attention as soon as it was published,and was later translated into many languages,with several versions circulating in different countries.So far,there are 13 Chinese translations of the book,including 8 from the mainland China and 5 from Taiwan.Among all of these Chinese translations,Li Li's and Sun Fali's were respectively the first in Taiwan and mainland China.In order to launch the dystopian trilogy,Huacheng Publishing House invited Li Li,who was overseas,to retranslate Brave New World once published in Taipei in 1969.Finally,the retranslation was published in mainland China in 1987.Yilin Publishing House launched the “World Literature Classics-Modern and Contemporary Series” at the end of last century,inviting Mr.Sun to be the first person in mainland China to translate this book,which was published in 2000.Under the guidance of manipulation theory,this thesis selects Li Li's and Sun Fali's versions for comparative study.The analysis is made from three aspects:ideology,poetics and patronage.By comparing the period and individual ideology,the motivation of translation,the language choice of the two translators at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels,as well as the patrons of both translations,this thesis discusses how the two versions are manipulated by the three elements of the manipulation theory.This thesis is divided into six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly introduces the research background,significance and methodology.The second chapter is the literature review,which respectively reviews the manipulation theory,the current research status of manipulation theory at home and abroad,and the research status of the original work.From chapter three to chapter five,the author compares the two versions from three elements of manipulation theory: ideology,poetics and patronage.Chapter six is the conclusion part,which summarizes the research content and shortcomings of the thesis.Through the comparative analysis,it is found that the ideology of context and individual,personal poetics and patronage of Li Li and Sun Fali have influenced the translators' selection of text,the adoption of translation methods and the overall style of translation to a certain extent. |
