| The translation material for this project is selected from The Girl on the Train(chapters 4-8)by Paula Hawkins,one of Britain's most popular female writers in 21 st century.Through the translation practice,the author of the report has a thorough understanding of the living conditions of women at the bottom of London society,and deepened his knowledge of the diary novels besides improving his translation skills.The way of writing in English is not the same as that in Chinese,so different translation skills are needed for different situations.Based on Catford's translation shifts theory,the author analyzes the source text and the target text from two levels: level shifts and category shifts.Level shifts refer to the conversion in terms of tense and singular and plural forms between English words and Chinese characters.Chinese characters do not have tense and plural forms,but different tenses and singular and plural forms of English words have different meanings.So in translating English into Chinese,level shifts are essential to the successful reproduction.Category shifts,including structure shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intro-system shift,mainly focuses on the conversion at lexical level between Chinese and English.By applying Catford's translation shifts theory,the author solves the difficulties encountered in translation by level shifts and category shifts,hence making it easier for Chinese readers to appreciate the translated version.Through this translation practice,the author truly realizes that by applying the translation shifts theory into the translation of diary novel,we can effectively convey the literary meaning and style of the original into Chinese combined with a rich knowledge of linguistic and cultural differences between source language and target language.It is hoped that this translation practice plus the report can draw more attention in China to the literary genre of diary novels for the purpose of better cultural communication. |
