On Deduction Strategy In Audiovisual Translation From The Perspective Of Multimodal Relation

Audiovisual works are playing an increasingly important role in facilitating the spread of Chinese culture overseas,which has led to more attention on translation studies on such type of works.Translation of the audiovisual works,or audiovisual translation,has its distinct feature of multimodality,which means the coexistence of more than one mode in a work.From the multimodal perspective,information conveyed through different modes can be integrated together,which helps with comprehensive consideration on the unique source text and thus improves translation quality of audiovisual works.Translation strategy has been highlighted in translation studies.With audiovisual translation flourishing,various strategies have been put forward based on its distinct features,among which the deduction strategy has played a significant role.This thesis takes documentary,a typical category of audiovisual works,as the research object,and makes a case study on the English-dubbing version of Birds’s-eye China(S1),a documentary featuring detailed depiction and comprehensive contents of China’s natural and cultural landscapes.With detailed analysis of the deduction cases in the English version of the production,this study attempts to explore the relation between the features of dubbing translation and the three types of the deduction strategy(condensation,reductive paraphrasing,and deletion)within the framework of multimodal relation.The conclusion through the analysis is that the application of the deduction strategy plays an important role in meeting the requirement of dubbing translation.The discussion on the three types of non-complementary multimodal relation confirms the significance in the application of the strategy as well.The multimodal relation can play a decisive role when there is close non-complementary relation between the major modalities;while sometimes it is the cooperation between the multimodal relation and other factors that influences the choice of certain types of the deduction strategy.All in all,in dubbing translation of audiovisual works,translators should first of all locate its features,which serve as the bases in the application of the deduction strategy.Then it is vital to figure out the core information of certain part,which is the emphasis in translation and decides the choice of the specific type of the deduction strategy.Besides,comprehensive consideration on both the textual level and the multimodal level should be taken to decide which type of the deduction strategy is adopted in dubbing translation practice.
