Modern research on design management originated in the 20th century,its basic theory also developed and improved completely.The author sorts out the development of design management in the early stage,and studies the germination of design management in the 19th century by tracking the development trajectory of western design.Beginning in the 1860s,the concept of "design" has turned just around the start of the arts and crafts movement.At the same time,William Morris,as an artist,has demonstrated his ideology of design management in the process of-transforming craftsman "making" into "creating".Its social and historical background lies in the fact that equipment manufacturing and assembly line technology accelerated the development of industrial manufacturing.In the face of this contradiction,the production mode has changed,the consideration mode has reorganized,and the balance before handicraft and machine production is sought.From the perspective of design management,the author interprets and examines William Morris' design management practice,puts his design concept into the context of The Times,and summarizes his design management thinking from the aspects of design process,business decision,and creative culture.By using the method of case study,this paper analyzes the design management practices of William Morris in design,production and strategic adjustment.William Morris' innovation in design thinking,practice and marketing management came from his effective grasp of design management thinking,which not only improves the efficiency of the design department,but also makes the management more organized and institutionalized.The author interprets the design management practice of William Morris by combing the correspondence,personal works and biographies of William Morris,and summarizes the design management methods and thoughts of William Morris by combining the description of William Morris' design and business practice by many foreign scholars.In particular,as a design manager,he participates in the practice of enterprise design,production,business decision-making and brand value promotion,thus bridging the boundary between designer,production and market.The design management activities of William Morris can be understood as the planning and adjustment of the creative process inherent in the design.The author studies through six chapters and summarize the middle of the nineteenth century design management ideas of William Morris and his business practice,brand comprehension,design culture,mining design management about hundred years ago through a classic case of modern enlightenment.
