A Study On The Causes Of The Popularity Of Can Xue's English-translated Fiction In America

As one of the representatives of Avant-garde literature,contemporary Chinese writer Can Xue displays quite a different color in this literary school with her own unique creative style.However,Can Xue's fiction presents different heat at home and abroad.In China,though known as Kafka in China,her popularity is still rather limited;on the contrary,she has received a relatively hot response abroad,especially in the United States.She is one of the most translated writers in contemporary Chinese literature and has won many internationally renowned awards: her novel The Last Lover won Best Translated Book Award of America in 2015 and got nominated in Man Booker International Prize,etc.The sharp contrast of the popularity between domestic China and overseas gradually raised a lot of concern.This thesis,starting from this phenomenon,will mainly explore the causes of the popularity of Can's Englishtranslated fiction.The whole thesis totally consists of three parts: introduction,the main body and conclusion.Integrating the earlier scholarship and documents related to the topic,the introduction clarifies main arguments,theoretical bases and overall arrangements of this thesis.The main body of this thesis falls into three chapters.The first chapter starts at the translation and reception of Can Xue overseas,which includes three branches: the first is the overall introduction of Can Xue,Can's works,and translations overseas;the second mainly deals with English translations and analyzes their main features,centering on the translators and publishers;the three mainly presents the reception of Can Xue's English-translated fiction from various aspects.The second chapter expounds the popularity of Can Xue in America from three aspects.Firstly,the author explains the “popularity” by definition which is special in this paper and presents the “popularity” from specific statistics.Afterwards the author dissects the external causess: translating intermediator,translating channel and the target readers are all significant factors to promote translation and reception of Can Xue's works.The third chapter is to have an interior study of Can's Dialogues in Paradise and The Last Lover.Dialogues in Paradise is translated by co-translators.As a collection of short stories,co-translators should keep consistency in the translating process from the perspective of intertextuality.Ideology is also on their considering list.In the translation of the long-length novel The Last Lover,the translator considers the understanding difficulty of Can's fiction and keeps the translation almost completely loyal to the original texts with the goal of remaining the internal logic and mechanism.Translators' creative transformation makes the translation more perfect.The conclusion part summarizes the causess of the popularity of Can Xue's English-translated fiction.The paper stresses the decisive function that excellent original texts bring and argues that the outer and inner factors in the process of translation and reception act momentous roles in advancing Can's spread.Through the case study of Can Xue,this paper captures that the voluntary translation of foreign publishing houses,the recommendation of professional readers,the translation model and the creative choice of translators are all of great significance for Chinese literature going out.
