Study On The Translation And Reception Effect Of Science Fictions Translated By Ken Liu In The English World

As a famous translator of contemporary Chinese sci-fi,Ken Liu is well received in major English-speaking countries with many translated works published overseas.Setting out from Ken Liu's major works including The Three-body Problem,Waste Tide,Invisible Planets,Broken Stars,this thesis is conducted from the perspective of Medio-translatology under the framework of 5W communication model.By answering the question of “who” “says what” “in which channel” “to whom” “with what effect”,based on objective data and subjective facts,this thesis explores the dissemination effects in western market and the reasons behind of the Chinese sci-fi translated by Ken Liu.This thesis contains four chapters.The first chapter is the literature review of Ken Liu and his translation works domestically and overseas.Chapter two narrates the theoretical framework and its applicability in this thesis.Chapter three is the research facts of the dissemination effects of the selected works in major English-speaking countries and it could be further grouped into objective and subjective dimensions.Objective statistics concern library holdings,sales volume,media reports and online ratings;subjective evaluations include reviews from professional figures and general readers.Chapter four employs the 5W communication model to explore the reasons behind and shares the responsibility of guiding Chinese literature “going global”.According to the analysis in this paper,Chinese sci-fi translated by Ken Liu is well received in major English-speaking countries and its success is contributed by the joint effort from translation subject,translation content,translation channels,translation audience and translation effect.Furthermore,the paper gives some advice to the translation and communication of Chinese literature,hoping to exhume the value at the most from the successful experience of Ken Liu.
