This thesis explores the explanatory power of Relevance Theory for cultural default with international publicity translation materials.To this end,it first clarifies the difference between cultural default information and cultural default transplanting and the emphasis that it is cultural default transplanting that should be explained by Relevance Theory.Then,the thesis classifies the cultural default information into four types including ancient quotations,idioms,political expressions with Chinese characteristics and popular Chinese expressions and generalizes their transplanting ways.The cultural transplanting ways are amplified in the frame of Relevance Theory.The difference of cultural default information and cultural default transplanting is discussed within the scope of translation.Cultural default information is the absence of shared background between the writer and the reader that hasn't been compensated in the source language.And cultural default transplanting is the compensation process of cultural default information.According to the author,the strategies used to compensate the default is the surface forms of cultural default transplanting.And it is those compensation strategies that should be explained by Relevance Theory.In light of this,the thesis analyzes the mechanism of cultural default and explains it with the principle of Relevance Theory.On the basis of it,all the cultural default transplanting ways mentioned are analyzed with this principle and leads to the conclusion that Relevance Theory is capable of accounting for cultural default transplanting.
