Compensation For Cultural Default In ICH Text Translation From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

A long history and splendid civilization of China have endowed us with an extremely rich cultural heritage,in which the intangible cultural heritage is particularly valuable.The diversified creation of ethnic groups is the fruits of the long-term production and living practices,the crystallization of the Chinese wisdom and civilization,as well as the “living” memory which has witnessed the development of Chinese history and culture.The dissemination of these outstanding intangible cultural heritages is of great significance in the overseas promotion of Chinese culture.As an indispensable part,translation can directly inject vitality into the cross-cultural communication of intangible cultural heritage.At present,however,the translation of intangible cultural heritage has encountered some typical problems such as the obvious difficulty in translating the culture elements and therefrom insufficient achievement in translation quantity and poor performance in translation quality.The translation text of this thesis is excerpted from An Illustrated Book of Beijing Intangible Cultural Heritage.With concise illustrations,the book summarizes and introduces nearly 300 Beijing intangible cultural heritage items.As an excellent representative,the book boasts high academic value and practical significance compared to other similar themed books published in recent years.Based on the translation of the excerpt from An Illustrated Book of Beijing Intangible Cultural Heritage,the thesis analyzes the compensation strategies for cultural defaults under the guidance of relevance theory.According to the theory,translation is viewed as a dual ostensive-inferential process in interpreting the source language,and therefore the translator undertakes dual roles.From the view of relevance translation theory,the thesis explains the necessity of the compensation for cultural defaults,studies the typical problems in compensating process,and draws corresponding guiding principles.With selected translation examples,the author applies those guiding principles in the compensation for cultural defaults on the premise of relevance translation theory.
