An Analysis Of Translation Strategies For Cultural-Specific Items In The C-E Text

County annals record the history,geography,customs,people,culture,education,and products of a county,and play an important role in understanding the development and history of a county.In recent years,in order to protect,develop,and utilize the valuable township culture,China has launched initiatives in compiling township annals.Chinese government founded the Local Chronicles Guiding Group to launch the culture project of compiling Chinese town chronicles,which is of great significance for the inheritance of traditions and local cultures,reservation of customs of famous towns,exploration of local development,and sharing of the historical stories.However,there are only few translations of the county annals.This paper attempts to analyze the applicability of Aixela's translation strategies in the translation of Yuhuan County Annals.This book records the development of Yuhuan county,Zhejiang province from 1969 to 1988.With strong local characteristics and many words with Chinese characteristics,the translation of some cultural elements is the biggest challenge.The translator tries to provide an analysis of applying translation strategies of Aixela's culture-specific items to Chinese-English translations.Based on the practice of the county annals translation,the translator would make suggestions on adapted and additional strategies.In the process of translation,the translator used eight translation strategies,including six Aixela's strategies and two supplementary strategies.Among them,Aixela's extratextual gloss,intratextual gloss,and linguistic(non-cultural)translation are used most frequently.Although Aixela's translation strategies are strongly applicable in the whole,the translator believes that Aixela's strategies have certain limitations,and adjustments could be made.For example,"orthographic adaptation" could be replaced by "transliteration",and two or more translation strategies could be used in tandem.
