| Musilin De Zangli is a full-length novel written by Huo Da,who is a famous writer of Hui ethnic group. The novel reflects the living conditions and customs of Chinese Muslims, and it reviews the long and difficult journey of Chinese Muslims.Since its publication, this work has been widely acclaimed in China not only for its unique narrative skills and exquisitely designed plots, but also for its revelation of the diversity, communication, and integration between different ethnic groups of the Chinese nation to a greater extent. The book won the third Mao Dun Literature Award in 1991.In the 1990 s,the English version translated by Guan Yuehua and Zhong Liangbi went to the overseas book market as one of the “Panda Books” series. However, researches on the English translation of Musilin De Zangli is still very limited.Critical translation studies, which was proposed in the 1980 s and 1990 s,is still an emerging theory of translation studies. It is a combination of descriptive translation research and critical discourse analysis,of which the purpose is to investigate the ideological factors behind the translation text selection, the use of translation strategies and methods, the characteristics of the text, and the impact of translation on ideology.Based on textual analysis,it combines language features with the production and the acceptance of text in specific historical and cultural contexts, revealing the influence of ideological factors during the translation process. This thesis borrows the viewpoint of translator’s voice by Hermans, and focuses on the translator’s voice in the English translation of Musilin De Zangli from the perspective of critical translation studies. In the light of critical translation studies, through the analysis concerning texts selected to be translated, translation purpose, translation strategies and methods, this thesis will try to observe the ideologies embodied in religion, gender, ethnicity, politics, and culture affect translation, and figure out how the source language culture and translators’ voices shape the discourse in translation. The research on ideology’s influence on translation will help to grasp the relationship between cultural transmission and ideology, and understand in what way is contemporary Chinese literature approaching the English world, which is more pragmatic and significant for contemporary Chinese literature “going global”. |
