For a long time,the silence phenomenon in English classroom has become the focus of English teachers' attention.In classroom interaction of senior high school,there are always silent students.This may not only influence the smooth process of English teachers' teaching,but also hinder the improvement of students' oral and communication skills,which has a negative effect on the normal classroom teaching and affects the quality of English classroom teaching in senior high school.National Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards of Senior High School English of 2017 requires students to develop basic English listening,speaking,reading and writing skills by learning the basic language knowledge,and begin to develop the ability to communicate with others in English.The Curriculum Standards encourages students to learn and apply English through various forms of classroom interaction under the guidance of teachers,and teachers should create as many language practice opportunities for them as possible.Therefore,it is necessary to study students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high school.This study adopts the instruments of classroom observation,questionnaire and interview to explore the following three questions:(1)Does students' silence phenomenon exist in English classroom interaction of senior high school? If so,what's the percentage of the silence phenomenon?(2)What are the reasons for students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high school?(3)What strategies can be applied to improve the students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high school?This study is conducted in a senior high school in M City,H Province.The author randomly selects 6 classes from grade 10.A total of 306 students and 6 English teachers participate into the study.This study is divided into three stages.In the first stage,in order to know whether there exists students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction,the author does 12 classroom observations in the 6 classes,in total 480 minutes,and records what is happening in classroom accordingly.In the second stage,306 students are invited to complete the questionnaires.Totally 306 questionnaires are distributed and 254 valid questionnaires are collected.And the data of the survey is analyzed by the statistical software SPSS 17.0.In the third stage,theauthor randomly selects 20 students and 6 English teachers,and interviews the 20 students and teachers separately.So that knows the reasons for students' silence in English classroom interaction of senior high school more deeply,and find out the effective strategies to improve the silence phenomenon.The result of the classroom observation shows that students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high School is common in M City,and the percentage of the silent students is large.The result of the questionnaire shows that the reasons for students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction are mainly summarized in students' factors,culture factors and teachers' factors.Among them,students' factors are mainly include students' learning habits and styles,personalities,and students' English competency.Culture factors are mainly include the consciousness of face and views on silence.And teachers' factors are mainly include questioning skills and feedback,teaching style,teaching modes.The result of the interview means that students and teachers have different opinions on the reasons for students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high school.In the students' interview,students also mention some other reasons,such as,the influence of anxiety,the negative self-concept,physiological fatigue,etc.In the teachers' interview,the 6 English teachers think that the reasons for students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high school are culture factors,students' personalities,students' English competency,learning habits and experiences.Based on the detailed analysis of the classroom observation,questionnaire and interview,this study puts forward some corresponding strategies to improve the silence phenomenon.For students' factors,teachers should adopt various methods to improve students' ability to apply English comprehensively.For culture factors,teachers should let students correctly understand the meaning of “silence is golden”.For teachers' factors,teachers should change the teaching modes appropriately and take the students as the center,etc.According to the results above,the author thinks that the joint efforts of teachers and students are needed to improve the students' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high school.We should build a harmonious classroom;advocate the group cooperation;change the single evaluation system of English;improve the skills of interaction;adopt more diversified and efficient strategies to promote students' participation,and truly effective reduction of thestudents' silence phenomenon in English classroom interaction of senior high school.
